<< (Small Caps/18A) Library of Formatting Examples (Boldface/00A) >>

All of the rules for Italics apply to Boldface. The Guidelines on Bold are simple: Basically, if it looks bold, tag it. If in doubt whether text is actually bold (rather than a print anomaly such as over-inking) ask in the Project Discussion for clarification. Other than the items mentioned below such as headings, this applies to inline text as well as 'stand-alone' text.

Headings and sub-headings often are printed in fonts or sizes that make them appear to be darker than normal text, but we do not mark them as bold unless other parts of the same lines clearly are lighter. That's why the first example begins with three lines that are not marked as bold: they are headings.

Before reviewing these examples, make sure your are familiar with the sections of the Formatting Guidelines on Bold Text and Placement of Inline Formatting Markup.
